Adwords and Big Name Affiliates

Since optimizing my Adwords ad for product X, my conversion rate has dramatically increased. Take heed that your ad copy is important in drawing customers that are willing to buy, not just look.

Another happy benefit is that using a big name affiliate like Amazon, Buy.com, Walmart, etc., is that people will continue to shop and buy other products. So far I have seen the following with Amazon:

1. Someone upgraded and purchased a more expensive product
2. Someone purchased multiple DVDs and books
3. Someone downgraded and purchased a lesser model (but hey, I still got the sale)
4. Someone purchased kitchenware!

I think you’re getting the point. Get customers to a big named affiliate with a diverse array of products and you will reap the rewards.

Multiple Adwords Ads

Google Adwords has a great feature that allows you to run multiple ads per ad group. The immediate benefit is that you can find which variations pull the most clicks. All you need to do is create your ad. After that, in your ad group, click on “Text Ad” next to “Create New Ad”. This will take you to the bottom of the screen where you can modify this new ad.

After you finish with your variation, select “Save New Text Ad”. You will then see the new ad at the bottom. What is great is that each ad will show click stats and percentages. I’m not sure if there is a limit to the ads you can create, but I made four ads to test variations of the adjectives: Amazing, Incredible, Massive, and Whopping. Guess which one pulled the most clicks? It was “Amazing”.

Adwords Campaign Update

To date I have started four ad groups with Google Adwords. Only one of the four is successful with both clicks and conversions. The other three were failures for various reasons. Here is a post-mortem on one of these failures.

Canon 20D Camera

I picked this because it had a higher sticker price and I wanted to try and sell something through buy.com. I had 897 impressions and 0 clicks! The average page position was 10.8. I was only willing to pay 0.15 cents a click.

Thoughts:
1. Buy.com doesn’t have a great price on this camera
2. Lots of competition
3. The 20D has high search engine traffic and I was afraid to spend more per click for a better page position (visions of spending a ton of money with no conversions danced in my head)
4. I varied my ad texts but nothing pulled a click

I am convinced that Adwords is viable with the right product/commission scheme/click price. I’m still searching for that perfect mix.
